UK to China
In recent years, driven by career assignments, university study, marriage and retirement plans, a growing number of foreign nationals living in the UK have chosen to relocate to China. Demand for moving household goods from the UK to China continues to rise.
Seapoe Global Relocations is a member of the International Association of Movers (IAM). For over ten years we have specialized in door-to-door international shipping of personal effects. We provide one-stop moving solutions to China for expatriate families, students, corporate assignees and retirees, including FCL/LCL sea freight and air baggage courier services. Our network covers London, Manchester, Edinburgh, Birmingham, Bristol, Oxford, Sheffield and other major UK cities and transport hubs, ensuring coordinated collection at your door and delivery to your new home in China.
To help you complete a compliant, efficient international move, we have prepared this guide based on real operational experience and destination customs policy data. The following sections cover shipping options, required clearance documents, prohibited items and key operational notes, so your luggage and furniture arrive safely and on time.
UK to China - Shipping Method Comparison and Selection
Moving from the UK to China generally involves sea freight or air freight. The two differ significantly in transit time, cost and suitable cargo.
- Air freight / courier to China: Door-to-door international air service, minimum 2 boxes, with a single-box weight limit usually of 25 kg. From doorstep collection and UK export customs to China customs clearance and final delivery, total transit time is approximately 15-25 days. This option suits urgent small shipments such as books, clothing and a few daily necessities. Note that air channels typically do not offer all-risk door-to-door insurance, and cosmetics and items containing built-in batteries are classified as prohibited.
- Sea freight to China: Charged by volume (cubic meters), usually with a minimum of 2-3 cubic meters. Because current Europe routes generally divert via the Cape of Good Hope, pure ocean transit takes about 45-50 days. Adding origin and destination handling plus customs clearance, the total process takes approximately 3 months. Sea freight is the most economical option for large furniture, pianos, bulk household goods and full-house moves.
Select the most cost-effective logistics plan based on your total volume and schedule requirements. As a general rule, shipments over 2 cubic meters should prioritize sea freight.
UK to China - Customs Regulations and Notes for Chinese Nationals Importing Personal Effects
This section applies only to Chinese passport holders returning to China. Foreign nationals relocating to China may skip to the next section.
I. Claiming the RMB 5,000 Duty-Free Allowance
The RMB 5,000 duty-free allowance for unaccompanied baggage is a legal policy benefit granted by customs to Chinese resident travelers (including students and visiting relatives). Travelers must pass through the manual channel upon arrival, declare their unaccompanied baggage to airport customs, obtain and complete the "Declaration Form for Baggage and Articles of Inbound/Outbound Passengers" on site, and have it stamped by customs. This stamped document allows you to apply the corresponding duty-free import quota for personal effects shipped afterward. Keep the original declaration form safe; losing it may result in forfeiting the duty-free benefit.
II. Required Documents for Customs Clearance in China
- Mainland Residents
- Original passport: Since May 22, 2026, Beijing Customs has explicitly required the original passport for verification when clearing postal and personal shipments; copies or scans are no longer accepted. This is now standard practice at major ports nationwide, so arrange to send the original in advance.
- Visa / permanent residence proof: The visa or permanent residence card from the country of origin must have been valid for more than 1 year, and the traveler must have resided overseas (in the UK) for a cumulative total of 365 days in recent years.
- Airport "Declaration Form for Baggage and Articles of Inbound/Outbound Passengers": Original, stamped by customs upon entry.
- Entry and exit records: Paper or electronic versions are both acceptable. These can be queried and downloaded via the WeChat/Alipay mini-program "Immigration Administration 12367".
- Bill of Lading (B/L): Provided by Seapoe Global Relocations.
- Packing list: Lists the name, quantity and depreciated value of items in each box. Seapoe consultants will guide you through this to avoid vague terms like "daily necessities" that trigger customs inspections.
- Hong Kong and Macau Residents: Must additionally provide a Home Return Permit (Mainland Travel Permit), Hong Kong/Macau ID card and a valid Mainland Residence Permit.
- Taiwan Residents: Must additionally provide a Taiwan Compatriot Permit (Mainland Travel Permit), Taiwan ID card and a Taiwan Compatriot Residence Permit.
III. Key Considerations
- All shipped items must strictly comply with the principle of "reasonable quantities for personal use". Brand-new items or goods in commercial quantities face taxation or return. For newly purchased furniture, remove tags, manuals and manufacturer logos before export and declare them as used personal effects. Customs explicitly rejects “zero-value declarations”; accurate values must be reported.
- High-value or special items (such as luxury goods, collectible figures, golf clubs and pianos) are taxed separately according to customs valuation standards. For example, signed artworks require an agency import approval document in advance; the import tax rate for pianos is approximately 15%-20%.
- Large items such as televisions and pianos may require 3C certification (China Compulsory Certification). Keep invoices or purchase receipts available for inspection.
- Complete all customs clearance procedures within 6 months of entry. Delays may prevent the shipment from clearing under the personal effects channel.
- When applying for duty-free clearance for a move from the UK to China, the total declared value of the origin shipment must be below 1,000 euros (approximately RMB 7,000). Chinese nationals moving from the UK for the first time who do not meet the criteria for the unaccompanied baggage duty-free channel can apply for a URN (Transfer of Residence Relief) to waive duties; otherwise they face approximately 20% VAT plus potential tariffs. Confirm your eligibility with a Seapoe consultant in advance.
UK to China - Customs Regulations and Notes for Foreign Nationals Importing Personal Effects
I. Declaration Requirements
Foreign non-resident long-term travelers importing personal effects into China must complete the "Declaration Form for Personal Articles of Inbound/Outbound Passengers of the Customs of the People's Republic of China". Foreign travelers entering China receive a duty-free allowance of RMB 2,000 per person for clothing and footwear. Declarations require personal identification, a valid Chinese long-term residence permit, the bill of lading (or air waybill) and a complete packing list.
II. Required Documents for Duty-Free Customs Clearance
- Original passport;
- Visa and Chinese long-term residence permit: Valid for more than 365 days. If your nationality differs from the country of departure (the UK), you must also provide proof of long-term residence visa status in the UK.
- Work / employment proof: Such as a Foreigner's Work Permit Decision Letter or Work Permit.
- Bill of Lading (B/L): Provided by Seapoe Global Relocations.
- Packing list: Prepared with assistance from Seapoe Global Relocations.
III. Special Considerations
- All items must be intended for personal use in reasonable quantities. Items brought in by non-resident travelers for the first time may qualify for duty-free import if regulations are met. Goods exceeding duty-free limits or appearing abnormal in quantity may be assessed for taxes by customs or ordered returned.
- Foreign nationals holding a Chinese work visa or residence permit valid for more than one year may apply for duty-free import of personal effects when relocating to China for the first time. Align the cargo arrival date precisely with the issuance date of your residence permit to avoid customs questioning your purpose of entry.
- Consignee marks on shipping packaging should use the pinyin or English spelling of the passport name to ensure an exact match with clearance documents and speed up processing.
- Declared information must be truthful and accurate. False or concealed declarations risk cargo detention, fines and legal liability. Based on our operational experience, "all-inclusive tax" or "double clearance tax-included" channels carry tax evasion risks; once discovered, the consignee is held liable. Always use formal declaration channels.
